## How to play

Bulls and Cows is a code-breaking logic game, also known as Hit & Blow. A secret code is hidden behind 3, 4 or 5 digits, all different (a leading 0 is allowed). Type a guess with the same number of different digits and press ✓. Each guess is scored: a bull is a digit that is in the code and in the right place, a cow is a digit that is in the code but in another place. "1B 2C" means one digit is exactly right and two more are in the code somewhere else; "No match" means none of your digits are in it. Use the clues from all your guesses to narrow the code down until you get every digit in place. Turn on Notes to cross digits out (✕) or mark them as certain (✓) on the keypad. Solo is unlimited: crack as many codes as you like with 3, 4 or 5 digits, and tap New code to start the next one straight away. Each code length has its own leaderboard, where your fewest guesses count. Two players is a pass-and-play duel on one device: each player picks a secret code for the other, you take turns guessing, and the first to crack the opponent's code wins — if player 1 gets there first, player 2 still gets the same number of turns to tie.

## Controls

Mouse or tap: tap the digits on the keypad, ⌫ to delete, ✓ to guess. Keyboard: number keys to type, Backspace to delete, Enter to guess. Notes: switch on Notes, then tap a digit to cycle it between ruled out (✕), certain (✓) and unmarked.

## Tips

- Start with guesses that share no digits, like 0123 and 4567: together they tell you how many of the code's digits are in each group.
- A guess with no match at all is great news: every digit in it can be crossed out at once.
- Compare two guesses that differ by a single digit: the change in bulls and cows tells you about exactly that digit.
- Once you know which digits are in the code, move them around one or two at a time to find their places.
- Four digits can almost always be found in 7 guesses or fewer; experienced players average around 5.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Bulls and Cows free?

Yes. Bulls and Cows is completely free, runs in your browser on phone and computer, and needs no download or sign-up.

### Is this the same game as Hit & Blow, 1A2B or number baseball?

Yes. It's the same classic code-breaking game under different names: Hit & Blow in Japan, 숫자야구 (number baseball, strikes and balls) in Korea, 1A2B in Taiwan and China, Picas y fijas in Latin America. Bulls are hits, strikes or A; cows are blows, balls or B.

### Can the code repeat a digit or start with 0?

Every digit in the code is different, and 0 can be in any place, including the first. Your guesses follow the same rule, so the keypad greys out digits you have already typed.

### How do the leaderboards work?

There is one leaderboard for each code length: 3, 4 and 5 digits. Every code you crack in solo can be saved with the number of guesses you needed, and your best result is the one that counts — fewer is better, and if two players tie, the one who got there first ranks higher. Revealed codes and two-player games aren't ranked.

### How many codes can I play?

As many as you like. Every solo game picks a new random code, and once you crack it, New code starts the next one right away. The game also keeps your personal best and average for each length, so you can watch yourself improve.

### How do two players play on one device?

Choose Two players. Player 1 picks a secret code while player 2 looks away, then passes the device so player 2 can pick theirs. You then take turns guessing the other player's code. Both players always get the same number of guesses, so if player 1 cracks it first, player 2 has one last guess to force a draw.
