## How to play

The grid is split into colored regions, one per row. Place exactly one crown in every row, every column and every color region. Crowns may never touch each other, not even diagonally. Tap a cell once to mark it with ✕ (a reminder that no crown can go there), tap again to place a crown, and a third time to clear it. Drag across cells to mark many ✕ at once. Every board is generated with exactly one solution, and it can always be found by logic alone — no guessing needed. Play as many boards as you like, from 6×6 up to 10×10: a fresh puzzle is generated every time, and after each solve you can jump straight into the next one. Each size has its own leaderboard for the fastest solve times.

## Controls

Mouse or tap: tap a cell to cycle ✕ → crown → empty, or drag to mark ✕ on several cells. Keyboard: arrow keys to move, Space or Enter to cycle, X for ✕, C for a crown, Backspace to clear, Z to undo.

## Tips

- Start with the smallest region: its crown has the fewest possible spots.
- If a region sits entirely inside one row or column, no other region can use that row or column — mark the rest with ✕.
- Before placing a crown, check whether it would wipe out every free cell of a neighbouring region. If so, that cell is a ✕.
- Turn on Auto ✕ to see every cell a crown rules out at a glance.
- Each size has its own leaderboard ranked by time, so take a breath, then go fast — wrong crowns turn red right away.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Crowns free?

Yes. Crowns is completely free, runs in your browser on phone and computer, and needs no download or sign-up.

### Is Crowns like the Queens puzzle?

Yes. It uses the same rules: one piece per row, column and color region, and no two pieces may touch, even diagonally. Here the pieces are crowns.

### Does every board have only one solution?

Yes. Each board is checked by a solver to have exactly one solution, and by a second, human-style solver to make sure it can be cracked with logic, without guessing.

### How does the leaderboard work?

Each board size, from 6×6 to 10×10, has its own leaderboard ranked by solve time — lower is better. Solve a board and you can save your time to that size's leaderboard, then keep playing new boards to beat it.

### Can I play unlimited Crowns puzzles?

Yes. A fresh board is generated every time, from 6×6 to 10×10, so you can play as many as you like. After a solve, tap Next puzzle to start another board of the same size right away. Each size keeps its own best time on your device.

### Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your current board, marks and timer are saved in your browser, so you can close the page and pick up where you left off.
