## How to play

Reveal every square that doesn't hide a mine. Each revealed number tells you how many mines touch that square, including diagonals. Use the clues to work out where the mines are and mark them with flags. Your first click is always safe and opens up an area to start from. Clicking a number whose mines are all flagged reveals the rest of its neighbors at once (chording). Clear all safe squares to win — hit a mine and it's game over. Choose Easy (9×9, 10 mines), Medium (12×16, 30 mines) or Hard (16×30, 99 mines).

## Controls

Computer: left-click to reveal, right-click to place or remove a flag, click a number to chord. Phone and tablet: tap to reveal, long-press to flag, tap a number to chord — or switch on flag mode to flag with a single tap.

## Tips

- Start at the edges of open areas: a 1 next to a single hidden square means that square is a mine.
- Learn the 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 patterns along a wall; they tell you exactly where the mines are.
- Chord as soon as a number is satisfied: it is the fastest way to clear safe squares.
- When only a coin flip is left, guess early rather than late so you lose less time.

No. Mines are placed after your first click, away from the square you chose and its neighbors, so the first click always opens a safe area.

Press and hold a square until the flag appears, or tap the flag button above the board to switch to flag mode, where every tap places or removes a flag.

### What is chording?

When a number already has that many flags around it, tap or click the number to reveal all of its other neighbors at once. If a flag is wrong, you will hit a mine.

### Which times count for the leaderboard?

Every difficulty has its own leaderboard of fastest clear times. After a win you can choose to save your time (this needs a sign-in). Your best time on every difficulty is also saved in your browser.
