## How to play

You start a run with 800 gold and a rusty +0 sword. Press Enhance to pay for a strike at the anvil: if it succeeds, the sword goes up one level; if it fails, it may break. Before every strike the game shows the exact success chance, the price of the strike and what the sword would sell for. The chance starts at 95% and drops as the sword climbs, while the price rises. From +0 to +4 you are in the safe zone, where a failure only costs gold. From +5 upwards a failure shatters the sword and you start over with a fresh +0. Press Sell to trade the sword for gold: its value grows steeply with every level, so a +8 pays for many more tries, and you get a new +0 to work on. The sword changes as it grows, from rusty iron to steel, azure, arcane, golden and crimson blades, up to the Legendary Sword at +20. The run ends when you forge a +20, when you run out of gold with nothing worth selling, or when you press End run. Your score is the highest level your sword reached during the run.

## Controls

Mouse or touch: tap Enhance to strike and Sell to cash in your sword. End run (press it twice) finishes the run and keeps your score. Keyboard: Space or Enter enhances, S sells.

## Tips

- +0 to +4 is the safe zone: failures cost gold but never the sword, so climb through it freely.
- A +8 to +10 sword sells for enough gold to pay for dozens of tries. Cash in before your wallet runs dry.
- Your score is your peak, not your gold. A sword you sell still counts for the level it reached.
- Even 85% means one break in about seven strikes. Read the odds before every press.
- Swords from +12 up are worth a fortune, and losing one hurts. Decide before the strike whether you are farming gold or chasing a record.
- The final strike from +19 to +20 succeeds only 15% of the time. That's why the Legendary Sword is so rare.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Sword Enhance free? Does it use real money?

Yes, it is completely free. The gold is play money that only exists inside the game: you can't buy it, there are no purchases or ads to unlock anything, and nothing can be cashed out. It runs in your browser on phone, tablet and computer with no download or sign-up.

### What are the odds at each level?

The success chance starts at 95% at +0 and falls as the sword climbs: 85% at +5, 75% at +10, 62% at +15 and only 15% for the final strike from +19 to +20. The game always shows the exact chance, the price of the next strike and the sword's sale value, and the roll is honest: what you see is what you get.

### When does my sword break?

From +0 to +4 a failed enhancement only costs the gold you paid. From +5 upwards, a failure shatters the sword and you start again with a fresh +0, so selling a valuable sword in time is part of the game.

### How is my score counted?

Your score is the highest level your sword reached during the run, even if you sold it later or it broke afterwards. When the run ends you can save that level to the leaderboard.

### Where does this game come from?

Sword Enhance is a remake of a game genre that was a hit in Korea in the Flash era, known there as 검 강화하기 ("enhancing the sword"). It is inspired by the enhancement systems of online RPGs, where you risk your gear for a +1. This HTML5 version plays in any modern browser.

### Is my run saved?

Yes. Your current run, gold and best level are saved in your browser on this device, so you can close the tab and continue later. A strike is decided the moment you press, so reloading the page can't undo a broken sword.
