## How to play

The board is a big 3×3 grid made of nine small tic-tac-toe boards. X moves first and players take turns placing their mark in a small board. The square you choose inside a small board sends your opponent to the small board in the same position on the big grid — play in the top-right square and they must play in the top-right board. If that board is already won or full, they may play in any open board. Get three in a row in a small board to win it and claim it with a big X or O. Win three small boards in a row — across, down or diagonally — to win the game. If every board is decided and nobody has a line, the game is a draw. Against the computer you play X; every win adds to your win streak for that difficulty, and a loss or draw ends it.

## Controls

Tap or click an empty square in a highlighted board. Keyboard: arrow keys move the cursor across the whole grid, Enter or Space places your mark. Use New game to switch between the computer and two players.

## Tips

- Think about where you send your opponent, not just where you play: a move that wins you a square can hand them a whole board.
- Avoid sending your opponent to a board where they already have two in a row.
- Sending your opponent to a board that is won or full lets them play anywhere — usually a gift.
- The centre board is part of four winning lines, so it is the most valuable one to win.
- Sometimes the best move is in a board you don't care about, just to keep your opponent away from the boards that matter.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe?

Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe, also called super tic-tac-toe or meta tic-tac-toe, is a strategic version of the classic game played on nine small boards arranged in a 3×3 grid. You win small boards to claim squares on the big board, and the square you play in decides which board your opponent must play next.

### What happens if I'm sent to a board that is already finished?

If the board you are sent to has already been won or is full, you may play in any board that is still open. All boards you can play in are highlighted.

### How strong is the computer?

Easy plays random legal moves. Medium takes and blocks small boards and avoids sending you to boards where you can win. Hard looks several moves ahead with alpha-beta search and is a real challenge.

### How does the win streak work?

Each win against the computer adds one to your streak for that difficulty. A loss or a draw ends the streak, and you can then save it to the leaderboard. Starting a new game in the middle of a game against the computer counts as a loss.

### Can two people play on one device?

Yes. Choose 2 players in the menu and pass the phone, tablet or computer back and forth. Two-player games don't count toward the leaderboard.

### Is my game saved?

Yes. Your current game, your streaks and your best streak for each difficulty are saved in your browser, so you can close the page and continue later.
